Industrial Design

What is industrial interior design?

Industrial style brings together modern lines with older materials. It’s a play on the contrast from warehouse elements from the industrial revolution such as exposed brick and beams, married with a lived-in appeal of modern flooring and fixtures.

This style is often associated with old-school lofts, unfinished wood, and exposed brick. It focuses on stripping back architectural details to their raw materials and playing on vintage, salvaged materials.

This style came from the urbanization of cities. As warehouses and factories moved to the outskirts of cities, empty buildings were transformed into apartment buildings and lofts. The transformation of cities created a mixture of styles that hadn’t been seen, as industrial spaces became transformed with modern furnishings and fixtures.

Elements of industrial interior design

Raw Materials

Natural wood, brick, concrete, and steel are major elements that you should include within industrial design. Implement these in several applications including furniture, flooring, walls, and more. Utilitarian and hardworking furnishings bring this style out in any space. Distressed metals and wooden floors complete an industrial look

Exposed Elements

Exposed brick is one of the more popular elements of this design, but it can also include bare steel beams or exposed ductwork.

Play on Textures

Combine different elements such as wood and metal. By mixing old materials with newer ones, you achieve the contrast that is necessary to ace this style. Colors are usually bold and earthy.
